How to Superscript and Subscript in Google Sheets

In layman’s terms, Superscript and Subscript is a formatting used to convert the specific characters smaller and shift slightly above or slightly below the rest of the characters from the word.

In Google Sheets, this can be used to enter the copyright & trademark symbols such as @, RM, or *, or mathematical equations such as Sqm2, cm2, or chemical equations like H2O, CO2, and many more.

Until now, writing this blog, there is no built-in superscript and subscript functionality available in Google Sheets. But yes, still there are ways to add those using the below methods.

Superscript and Subscript CHAR() Template for Google Sheets

As most of you know CHAR() function provides the character values against the number values (ASCII codes) but many of you don’t know it also provides the Superscript and Subscript characters against the number values.

Yet it does not cover all the characters to be converted into superscript and subscript but it covers enough to write almost all the types of values which include superscript and subscript letters, symbols, or numbers.

You can download and copy the “Superscript and Subscript CHAR() Template”for your future reference.

Add Superscript and Subscript Using CHAR() Function

In Google Sheets, you can use the CHAR() function within the formula to write the values which include superscript and subscript letters, numbers, or symbols within that.

For example, you have to write the value “X2+2X2and for the same, you have to write the formula including the CHAR() function within it.

Go to the cell, wherein you want to enter the value and write the formula including the CHAR() function.

=”x”&char(178)&”+2x”&char(8322)

How the Formula Works

In the formula above firstly, we entered the “x” value within a double quotation as our value starts with the “X” and to make it a normal text and after that, we used the “&” and sign to combine the next value and then we have entered the “CHAR” function with the value”178” which is the number value of superscript number “2” to make the “2” as superscript.

In the second step, we again entered the “&” and sign and then entered the “2X” characters within the double quotation to make it a normal text and then again entered the “&” sign to combine the further values and then “CHAR” function with the value “8332” which is the number value of subscript number “2” to make the “2” as subscript.

Add Superscript and Subscript Using Copy & Paste

This copy-and-paste is a very easy and simple way to write the Superscript and Subscript values. The only requirement for this is to save or copy the “Superscript and Subscript Template” for you. To do this follow the below steps.

  • First, write the value as normal text.
