How to Apply Strikethrough in Google Sheets

Strikethrough formatting is majorly used to highlight the tasks as completed or no longer required. This formatting passes a line through the middle of the text which indicates the task is now completed or become older and no longer required.

Users can apply this formatting when they want to highlight any task as completed and want to leave that task as done with no longer action required.

Conditional Formatting is the best way to apply the auto strikethrough formatting to the “To do list”. The best way of applying this formatting is along with the checkboxes. To do the same, follow the below steps:

  • First, select the cells and go to the insert tab and click on “Tick box” to add the checkbox in the selected cells.

  • Now, click on the “Format cells if” value field’s drop-down arrow and choose “Custom formula is”.
  • Once selected, enter the formula “=$A2=TRUE” within the input bar below the “Custom Formula is” to apply the formatting only when the checkbox gets checked.
  • In the end, choose the strikethrough format from the “Format style” and color if want to apply to the strikethrough cells and click “Done”.

Now, whenever you tick the checkbox, the text in the cell next to it will get strikethrough applied to it. We had also chosen the green color from the “Formatting style” in the above step, so the strikethrough cells are also getting green but you can choose another color or no color based on your preference.
