How to Change Row Height and Column Width in Google Sheets

In Google Sheets, the default row height is 21, and the column width is 100, so when you have larger text in the cells it overlaps the cells, and at that time you want to adjust the row height or column width of the cells.

 In this tutorial, we will show you how to increase or decrease it easily using any of the below-defined methods.

Change a Row Height Using Mouse Drag Drop

  • First, hover your mouse between the two row numbers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow.
  • Once your cursor changes to an arrow, click and hold the mouse and drag it to adjust the row height.

Change Multiple Rows Height Using Mouse Drag Drop

  • First, to select the rows, hover your cursor on the row number from where you want to select the rows and then click and hold the mouse and drag it down.
  • Or if you want to select all the rows of the data set using the keyboard shortcut, go to any cell of the first row and then press “Shift + Spacebar + Spacebar” to select that row, and then press “Ctrl + Shift+ downwards arrow” keys.
  • Now, hover your mouse between any two row numbers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow, and then click and hold the mouse and drag to adjust the row height of all selected rows.

Note: In the above method all the selected rows will get adjusted with the same height.

Autofit Row Height by Double Click

Sometimes you have cells with values as wrap text and you want to make that text visible by adjusting the row height based on that text.

  • First, to select the rows, hover your cursor on the row number from where you want to select the rows and then click and hold the mouse and drag it down.
  • Or if you want to select all the rows of the data set, go to any cell of the first row and then press “Shift + Spacebar + Spacebar” to select that row, and then press the “Ctrl + Shift+ downwards arrow” keys.
  • Now, hover your mouse between any two row numbers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow and then double click.

Autofit Multiple Rows Height Using Right Click

  • First, select the rows as mentioned in the above steps.
  • After that right click and choose “Resize rows”

  • Now, choose “Fit to data” if want to adjust the rows based on the values in that.
  • Or, choose “Specify row height” and enter the row height in pixels within the input field.
  • Once done, click Ok and your rows will get adjusted accordingly.

  • To resize the height of the rows back to default at 21 pixels, select the rows and open the “Resize rows” dialog box again and enter the value as 21 in the “Specify rows height” input field and press OK.

Change a Column Width Using Mouse Drag Drop

  • First, hover your mouse between two column headers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow.
  • Once your cursor changes to an arrow, click and hold the mouse and drag it towards the left or right to adjust the column width.

Change Multiple Columns Width Using Mouse Drag Drop

  • First, to select the columns, hover your cursor on the column header from where you want to select the columns, and then click and hold the mouse and drag it.
  • Or if you want to select all the columns of the data set using the keyboard shortcut, go to any cell of the first column and then press “Ctrl + Spacebar + Spacebar” to select that column, and then press “Ctrl + Shift+ rightwards arrow” keys.
  • Now, hover your mouse between any two column headers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow, and then click and hold the mouse and drag it to adjust the column height of all selected rows.

Note: In the above method all the selected columns will get adjusted with the same width.

Autofit Column Width by Double Click

  • Or if you want to select all the columns of the data set, go to any cell of the first column and then press “Ctrl + Spacebar + Spacebar” to select that column, and then press the “Ctrl + Shift+ rightwards arrow” keys.
  • Now, hover your mouse between any two column headers and you will find your cursor changes into an arrow and then double click.

Note: The above method will adjust the columns’ width based on the length of values in them except the wrap text values.

Autofit Multiple Column Width Using Right Click

  • First, select the columns as mentioned in the above steps.
  • After that right click and choose “Resize Columns”

  • Now, choose “Fit to data” if want to adjust the columns based on the values in that.
  • Or, choose “Enter new column width” and enter the column width in pixels within the input field.
  • Once done, click OK and your columns will get adjusted accordingly.

  • To resize the column width back to default at 100 pixels, select the columns and open the “Resize column” dialog box again and enter the value as 100 in the input field and press OK.
