How to Remove Rows in Google Sheets

The spreadsheet is made up of a combination of rows and columns which make cells to enter the data. Users can remove unwanted or extra rows from the data set. They can remove a row or multiple adjacent and non-adjacent rows at the same time.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to remove rows in Google Sheets.

Remove a Row in Google Sheets Using Right Click Option

  • First, select the entire row, or go to any cell within the row that you want to remove.
  • After that, right click and choose “Delete row” from the drop-down menu.
  • At this moment, the row will get removed and the data below that row will get shifted above.

In the above example, we had selected the cell (B4), so when we choose “Delete row”, only row number 4 got deleted, and the data below that got shifted above.

Remove a Row in Google Sheets Using the Edit Menu Option

This is another quick way of removing the row from the spreadsheet.

  • First, select the entire row, or go to any cell within the row that you want to remove.
  • After that, go to the “Edit” menu and then hover the mouse cursor on the “Delete” from the drop-down menu and choose the “Row” option.
  • At this moment, the selected row will get removed and the data below that row will get shifted above.

Remove Multiple Rows in Google Sheets

In Google Sheets, you can remove the adjacent and non-adjacent multiple rows in one go instead of deleting them one by one.

Remove Adjacent Rows

  • First, select the first row from where you want to delete the rows and then press and hold the “Shift” key and press the upwards arrow key or downwards arrow key to select the rows’ upside or downside rows.

  • Once selected, release the “Shift” key.
  • After that, right click and choose “Delete rows” from the drop-down menu.

  • Or, after selecting the rows, go to the “Edit” menu and choose the “Delete” option and then click on the “Rows” option.

  • At this point, all the selected adjacent rows will get deleted.

Remove Non-Adjacent Multiple Rows

  • First, select the first row which you want to delete and then press and hold the “Ctrl” key and then click on the row numbers of each row one by one to select the non-adjacent rows.
  • Once selected, release the “Ctrl” key.
  • After that, go to the “Edit” menu and hover the mouse on the “Delete” option, and then choose the “Selected rows” option.

  • Or, right click and choose “Delete selected rows” from the drop-down menu.

  • At this point, all the selected non-adjacent rows will get deleted.

Keyboard Shortcut to Remove the Rows

  • For Windows OS, Select the row or multiple rows which you want to delete and then press the “Ctrl + -“  keyboard shortcut, and the selected rows will get removed and data will get shifted above.
  • For Mac OS, Select the row or multiple rows which you want to delete and then press the “Cmd + -“ keyboard shortcut, and the selected rows will get removed and data will get shifted above.­

Remove Rows from Google Sheets Mobile

  • First, tap on the row number to select a row.
  • If want to remove multiple rows at once, after selecting the first row, tap and hold on the bold circle on the upper side border or the downside border of the row and drag it upside to select the upper rows or downside to select the lower rows.
  • Once you are done with selecting a row or multiple rows, tap and hold within the selected rows and you will get the pop-up opened.
  • Now, click on three dots of the pop-up menu and then click on “Delete” to delete the selected rows.
