How to Add Rows in Google Sheets

As same as adding new columns, you can also add new rows within the existing data set in the Google Sheets. A single new row or multiple rows can be added at once and adding rows is a very easy and quick task consisting of max two or three steps.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to insert rows in Google Sheets.

Add a Row in Google Sheets Using Insert Menu

  • First, go to any cell of the row or select the entire row above or below which you want to insert a new row.
  • After that, go to the “Insert” tab and then hover the mouse cursor on the “Rows” option.
  • Now, choose the “Insert 1 row above” or “Insert 1 row below” option to insert the row above or below the selected cell or row.

  • At this point, the new row got inserted above the selected row because, in the above step, we had chosen the “Insert 1 row above” option.

Add a Row in Google Sheets Using Right Click Option

  • Click on the row number to select the entire row and then right click.
  • After that, choose the “Insert 1 row above” or “Insert 1 row below” option to insert the row above or below the selected row.

  • Or, go to any cell of the row above which you want to insert the new row and then right click and choose the “Insert 1 row above” option.

Note: The other step just mentioned above, will not provide the option to insert a row below, so if want to insert a row below the selected cell or row, always select the entire row by clicking on the row number.

Add Multiple Rows Using Insert Menu

  • First, select the multiple rows before or after which you want to add the new rows.

  • Or, You can only select the cells from the rows instead of entire rows to insert the new multiple rows.

  • After that go to the “Insert” tab and then hover the mouse cursor on the “Rows” option.
  • Now, choose the “Insert 3 rows above” or “Insert 3 rows below” option to insert the rows above or below the selected cells or rows.

Note: It showed “Insert 3 rows” because we had selected 3 cells or rows and the number of multiple rows to be inserted will always be dependent on the row count you select.

Add Multiple Rows Using Right Click

  • Select the entire rows by clicking on the row numbers to select the entire rows and then right click. (Here we have selected 2 rows)
  • After that, choose “Insert rows above” or “Insert rows below” to insert the rows above or below the selected rows.

  • Or, select only the cell of the rows above which you want to insert the rows and then right click and choose the “Insert rows above” option.

Note: The other step just mentioned above, will not provide the option to insert the rows below, so if want to insert the rows below the selected cells or rows, always select the entire rows by clicking on the row numbers.

Shortcut to Add Rows in Google Sheets

  1. First, select the rows or cells of the rows above which you want to insert new rows.
  2. After that, Press and hold the “Alt + Shift” keys together.
  3. Now, press “I” then “R” and then “R” again to insert the new rows above the selected rows.

Shortcut to Add Rows Below the Selected Rows

  1. First, select the rows or cells of the rows below which you want to insert new rows.
  2. After that, Press and hold the “Alt + Shift +” keys together
  3. Now, press “I” then “R” and then “B” to insert the new rows below the selected rows.
