How to Add or Remove Underline in Google Sheets

The underline formatting adds a line underneath the text in a cell. In Google Sheets, users can underline the entire value or the part of a text in the cell to highlight that and to make them visible easily in the entire data set.

In this tutorial, we will show you, how to underline the cells or the part of the text in a cell and remove it.

Underline the Entire Text Using the Format Menu

  • First, select the cell or range of cells that you want to underline.
  • After that, go to the “Format” tab and hover the mouse on the “Text” option and then click on “Underline”.

  • The moment you click on the “Underline” option, it will add a line underneath the text in the selected cells.

Underline the Text Using the Keyboard Shortcut

  • First, select the cell or range of cells which you want to underline.
  • After that, simply press the “Ctrl +U” keys and the text of the selected cells will get underlined.

Underline Part of the Text in a Cell in Google Sheets

Sometimes, users only want to underline the part of the entire text in a cell. Users can do it in one cell at a time by following the below steps.

  • First, go to the cell and then double-click on it or press the “Fn +F2” keys together to get the cell in edit mode.
  • After that, select only the part of the text that you want to underline.

  • Once selected, simply press the “Ctrl + U” shortcut keys and the underline will get applied to the selected text only.

Apply Double Underline to the Cell

Double underlining applies to the overall cell and not only to the text within the cell.  Users cannot apply a double underline to multiple cells at once, they have to apply it one by one.

  • First, select the cell that you want to double-underline.
  • After that, go to the toolbar and click on the “Borders” icon to open the border’s menu with different types of border options to choose from.
  • Now, click on the “Double Bottom Border” style to apply it.

  • At this moment, the selected cell will get double-underlined.

Note: In case, you do not find the “Double Bottom Border” in the border’s menu, just open the “Border’s menu”, click on the drop-down arrow, and then select the “Double Border” style to make it visible in the “Border’s menu”.

Underline on Google Sheets Mobile App (IOS & Android)

  • Select the cells or range of cells that you want to underline and then tap on the “Text formatting” icon to open the formatting options.

  • Now, under the “Text” header, click on the “Underline” icon and it will get applied to the selected cells.

Underline a Row and Column

If you want to underline the entire row or column, just select the entire row or column, and then press the “Ctrl + U” keys and the underline will get applied to the entire selected row or column.

Remove the Underline in Google Sheets

  • To remove the underlined text, select the cells that have underlined formatting applied and then press the “Ctrl + U” keys and the underline formatting will get removed.
  • From the cells, that have partial text underlined, you have to select that cell and need to press the “Ctrl + U” keys twice.
